The 1930 Census shows that he, 23,and Albedia were living with his parents at 419 1/2 N. Union St. He was 21 when he married. It shows that he came to US with his mother, Mitchell and Fomina in 1920. (Roll T626_1410, p 2b, ed 43, image 0152)
It was with deep sadness that I read about the fire at 233 West Sullivan. You see, this was more than a house to me; it is the home that I still walk in my most peaceful dreams. It is the home that is so engrained with childhood memories of my loving grandparents, Henry and Albedia Eade (Siti and Gidi in Arabic), my aunts and uncles (Raymond, Bobby, Marshall, Vinnie, Beverly and my mom Delores) and the countless memories of laughter, joy and family. We lived right next door in the home they originally lived in before moving to 233, and I believe the Hebert kids (in fact all the grandkids) spent more time there than at my house. In fact, their parents lived across the street and their siblings and relatives lived in the surrounding homes. I just thought this was normal! The love and comfort of the Eade family drew me as tightly as the afhigans my Siti stayed up late making for us. I can picture her there in the main den, with her glasses on her nose, needles flying, and switching from English to Arabic when she didn't want her "Johnny" to hear her complaining. I can hear the clacking of hocky sticks on the game board as Vinny and Marshall played yet another game on the coffee table. I loved seeing my Gidi walking up the hill after a day at the store and walk into the porch. But the heart of the home was the kitchen and the dining room. Certain smells even now make me smile as I remember Gidi mixing his special salad dressing, and Siti cranking the meat mixer for the kibbi, the Sunday morning light streaming through the large glass window over Gidi's shoulder as we all crowded around the table. I can walk through that house still, winding up the stairway to the loft where my uncle built his "pad" with every pillow in the house. I can remember shaking as my brother and I crept down to the basement where my uncles convinced us the monsters gathered. If you look on the ashphalt, all those little circles in the driveway are my pogo stick record (when my Siti saw what I had done (to my horror) she never said a cross word to me). I can see her pulling the grape leaves from the vine and hear the sound of Raymond telling another war story. Sadly, I remember pullling out from that same driveway when we moved away, and how I knew things would never be the same. The article mentioned what Olean must have once been like. I can tell you it was an American dream come true. Yet, it was more than a story about a Lebanese immigrant with only $17 in his pocket coming over in the 1920's and becoming a "Who's Who In Business". It was more than the fact that all the Eade children became successful and established citizens, contributing to their communities. The story of 233 W. Sullivan St. is all about family, country, and love of God when all those things meant something tangible and worth dying for. As a child, I saw no lines between any of these concepts; they were all one and the same because it was lived so real in the everyday lives of this wonderful family. The Eades, Blacks, Heberts and other family members only hope that we can carry this tradition in own families in that same spirit. Siti and Gidi, I know the mansion you're in now is even more wonderful than this home was, but we miss you. These memories will always remain. (Johnny Hebert)
